New options for Booklet Labels

We have already spoken on many occasions on our blog about the advantages of multi-page labels that allow us to incorporate additional information on the product.

The Booklet  label is a self-adhesive and foldable label with a double layer of material that offers a surface area that is 3 times greater in comparison to the conventional one-layer label.
New communication solutions and options!:  The label offers a solution to labelling products with problems like the lack of space to give information, illegible texts, descriptions in different languages or that include promotional texts.

Advantages and Other Uses:

.Optimisation of label space. Less space given to the label on a product (it is concentrated and even has more information in just one element and in a lower sized area), which allows us to keep the product attractive and increase sales possibilities (multilingual labels).

. Visual impact… awaken the consumer’s curiosity
Promotions on transparent packaging:  The inner face of the base label can be used as a promotional element including codes, information, images etc.. that the consumer will only discover after using the product.

Options and finishes:
. Base Label: Print on white or transparent FILM and up to 7 different colours can be printed.
. Superior Label: Print on white FILM and up to 5 colours.

In addition to the already mentioned advantages, is an ideal option for labelling applications on products such as food and drink, cosmetics, cleaning, industrial products, electronics etc.

Waterproof Labels

In the summer we fancy cool things to fight the heat. Very often, the labels on some products, like drinks, are affected due to exposure to water or extremely cold conditions

The result? A “soaked” label, that deteriorates the product’s original image.

Therefore, the solution is to use self-adhesive papers that are water resistant. These are materials that are specially designed to survive in optimal conditions in water and at low temperatures to ensure the label stays intact.

In addition to very high adhesion, this type of label keeps its base colour, preventing the label paper from turning grey when the product is immersed in water.

This is a more than recommendable option for wines, cavas, beers and, in general, any type of drink that wants to boast a quality label that does not wrinkle, does not slide off and does not go dark under water.

For more information and the possibilities offered by Waterproof labels, please send us an e-mail to marketing@ipe-innovaciones.com.

IPE Eco-awareness: Our commitment to the Environment

At IPE, Innovaciones Para Etiquetajes S.L., we continue working in different actions whose objective is to minimise the impact on the environment.

The latest of these actions has been the important investment we have recently made in our production building where we have substituted the lighting we had to date for new lighting with LED’s.

LED’s, thanks to their reduced size, offer greater capacity to generate light, in addition to other advantages:

1).-Greater Energy Efficiency. According to the data we have, LED’s consume between 80-90% less energy. This means two things:

a).-Greater savings in our electricity invoice
b).- An energy saving that is equivalent to not having to sacrifice the life of 780 trees*in one year!.
*Real calculation based on the lighting change carried out in our installations.

2).-Less air conditioning consumption: Summer is coming, and this year promises not to be so hot (at least not in the IPE installations) the reason? as opposed to traditional bulbs, LED’s do not give off heat so, in some ways, this fact influences on the atmosphere temperature in our building.

3).-More light during more time: The average life of an LED lamp is 45.000 hours compared to 2.000 with a standard bulb. Moreover, they require less maintenance, so we just keep adding advantages.

4).- The main reason for the change: They are ecological
Traditional bulbs contain different toxic products whilst LED’s comply with the European RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Standard, which establishes restrictions in the use of certain dangerous substances in products for electric and electronic equipment.. and moreover, they are recyclable!

At IPE INNOVACIONES PARA ETIQUETAJES, S.L, we believe that the conservation and improvement of the environment is, in addition to being a priority, also the best guarantee for our future.

That’s why we continue investing in actions like this, that give shape and meaning to our IPE Eco-awareness programme, a programme through which we hope to make our workers, suppliers and clients more aware and more involved through actions that contribute to sustainable development.

Article: Basic considerations to take into account when developing a new product label

After the effort involved in starting up a new product, then comes the effort of deciding what the image of this product is going to be like in the market, a key decision upon which good part of its sales success depends.

Given the importance of the label for the sales possibilities of a re-vamped or new product, we have summarised some fundamental concepts when developing a label; advice that is fruit of the experience gained in works carried out alongside our clients and their marketing departments or marketing and graphic design agencies.

1).-Who am I? Apply the Elevator Pitch technique to your product:
If you only have 20 seconds, how would you present it? what do you want to highlight most?, is it clear who it is targeted at?, what is it’s use?, what makes it different from the rest?.. it is essential that the key product information is visible and quickly understandable.

2).- How do I dress?:
Yes, we haven’t made a mistake in the title... designing a label is "dressing the product".
Just in the same way we adapt our clothes depending on the circumstances, the same should happen with the product.

It may well be the case that there are already graphic elements (images,  typographies, etc..) that form part of the brand’s corporate image and it is in our interest to keep them, but it is also important to consider the product’s own independence, more so in the case where the manufacturer has a wide range of products. Will I dress the same for a kid’s party as when I practice sport? The same happens with products.

For example, if we are looking at a product for youngsters we should think; are we interested in getting the children’s’ attention or are we interested in getting their parents’ attention? and what if the product is for children but also consumed by sports people, as happens with some juices or concentrated fruits? In this case we evaluate what will be the “final clothing” apt for our target, whether defined or for various.

The general appearance of the product through the label image should help to attract the public for what it is created for, and this should be reflected in the colours, images, typography and also in the label’s final finish.

A clear example about the subject of finishes: If the product is going to be submerged in water at any point, we should consider a waterproof label.

3).- If brief is good, twice as good
. Communicate the benefits and uses of the product
. Comply with the standards corresponding to labelling
. Inform about the product’s composition

.....all on a relatively limited space like a label. In order not to saturate the consumer with information and end up with a label full of text, it is important to synthesise the information to be included to the utmost.

If, given the product’s characteristics or those of the target market, it is impossible to leave text out, then we should consider using one of the multi-page labels or a peel off label as the main or secondary label. That is why it is important to know the options in materials and finishes so as to establish the label’s design in one way or another.

4).- Choosing a good professional and a multidisciplinary team to develop the label

The choice of a good professional is the key for the label to meet its objectives from the design and communication point of view. Once this professional has been selected, it is essential to work in a team.

Our experience tells us that if you work in a team (product manufacturer, director of marketing, external agency or graphic designer and supplier of labelling solutions) the result will be much closer to being a success. The gathering together of know-how and the interchange of ideas will mean that the label will end up fulfilling all of its requirements.

5).- Printing and Materials:
Technologies, materials, finishes are the tools to achieve the final result, but there are multiple combinations! how can we know which is right for our label?

Let’s go back to the previous point: Teamwork

To choose the final finish for the label we will need to have the technical assistance given by the label manufacturer.

For this very reason, at IPE we believe and defend our work methodology called “Laboratory of ideas”, based on just that, teamwork, and aimed at offering the latest developments in our sector, materials, inks, printing processes, etc.. with the purpose of developing new products as well as customised projects.

IPE, awarded at the "World Labels Awards"

We are pleased to inform you that we have recently been awarded, at the last edition of the  "World Label Awards“, the sector’s worldwide awards, for the label developed for Bodegas Planas Albareda.

This award means worldwide recognition of our technical printing standards and our label finishes.

"World Label Awards" are the awards given by the worldwide associations of label manufacturers and they acknowledge innovation and technological development in the sector. The jury is made up of members from different world scale associations, FINAT (Europe), JFLP (Japan), LATMA (Australia), ABIEA (Brazil), SALMA (New Zealand) and TLMI (USA).

The label developed for Bodegas Planas Albareda was also given recognition at the last edition of the FINAT'2013 awards (International Federation of Self-Adhesive Label Manufacturers).

The awarded label stands out for the quality of the details as it is a label with some effects and combinations that are rather complex regarding the material chosen for printing and the stamping applied. Hot-stamping and printing at the same time that allows us to create a high quality label that loyally represents the combination between a modern style and the traditional image of this cava brand producer.

We work each project to the utmost detail, applying the latest technological advances and searching for the optimal combination of materials, inks, finish, etc.. for each type of label. For this very reason these acknowledgments make us proud, whilst driving us to continue betting on innovation and technology investments, which allow us to look for new ways of continually surpassing ourselves.

For us, innovation and providing added value to our clients have always been two of the company’s main features throughout its history.

A demonstration of this is the recent investment that we in the company have made in a new machine that allows us to apply different finishes to the same label- offset, flexography, stamping, microstamping, relieves or laminates- all at once.

That’s why we can say that "currently, with IPE, there are no limits to communicate and differentiate a product through its label".

Thanks to everyone!! to those who have made this award possible and a special thanks to Bodegas Planas Albareda for trusting in us for this project.

One need, One label

ARTICLE: Consumer Friendly Labels.

“Friendly” labelling is one that provides the consumer with added value and seeks to satisfy all or most of the needs that consumers have when getting to know and buying a product, therefore improving consumer-product interaction.

“Friendly” labelling is a powerful tool to provide the more detailed information that consumers demand and need about the products they buy.

And especially in the food sector where consumers (according to different surveys*) are “quite lost” when trying to understand and comprehend the products’ nutritional information.

By making things easy for the consumer and thinking about a “friendly” label or packaging that also complies with the basic legal requirements regarding information, that helps the consumer to get to know about the product and its composition in a more attractive and simpler way, is a guarantee for success as it is becoming more and more important that the product is “honest, clear and direct” regarding “what it is” and “what it is going to give the consumer”.

According to a study carried out in the USA, the information included in a product has more weight in the consumers’ decision than the information they can get from other sources.

When consumers look for general information about a product, most of them put more faith in the information obtained from the printed label that accompanies the product.

The general trend seems to indicate that consumers more often demand healthier products or products that, without being totally healthy, provide the most complete information possible about what they offer from the nutritional point of view so that the consumer can choose at any time and know what he/she is consuming.

Therefore, the food industry has an excellent opportunity to convert its products (from the packaging and labelling point of view) into “friendly” products that provide information that allows us to understand their nutritional benefits and product composition at a glance.

This information must be clear, simple and make consumer understanding easier.

We shouldn’t forget that the usual information we see on food product labels, despite having improved a lot over the past few years, is still not clear for the majority of consumers.

The tool to capture this information: The product’s label

If, moreover, we want to go a stage further and expand on product information and the possibilities for interaction with the consumer, our interactive labels undoubtedly become the best option to meet the upward trend of more and more demanding consumers.

New Materials

At IPE, Innovaciones Para Etiquetajes S.L., we continuously incorporate new materials into our high quality labelling and sleeves manufacturing processes.

We recently got "new members” in our family of materials. We take great pleasure in presenting some of them here:

DOUBLE-SIDED METALLIC EFFECT MATERIALS: A very new material whose main feature is the golden metallic effect that it gives to both the front and back of the label. An ideal material for transparent packaging of liquid materials in which the label is always present and, moreover, it can be printed directly onto the adhesive meaning that the reverse side can be printed too and therefore we can take double advantage of the “gold” effect.

NEW FILMS specially designed for food product labelling. They allow us to print the image/logo on the film and they can stand temperatures below 5ºC.

HOLOGRAPHIC SHRINK FILM: A new high quality shrinking film, applicable to all types of sleeves that gives a holographic finish with different tonalities and different coloured flashes.

NEW MATERIALS to manufacture textile labels for the bedding industry.

NEW MATERIALS for labelling blood plasma bags that guarantee 100% adherence under extreme conditions. These are adhesives formulated to act at low temperatures, therefore guaranteeing secondary label adherence (labels used to note down additional information after the bag has been frozen).

For more information about these and other new concepts, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at marketing@ipe-innovaciones.com.

IPE ADVICE: Annual Labelling Check-up

We are inaugurating a new section with brief advice about labelling and solutions in packaging.

Some of the advice will be about printing formats, recommendations about materials, well, "technical advice".

We will also publish advice focused on themes related to "graphic design for labels" and, lastly, we will talk about other more “marketing-like” themes aimed towards positioning and differentiating products through labelling/packaging.

We leave you with the first piece of advice from this section: ANNUAL CHECK-UP for product LABELLING/PACKAGING.

Just like many other things we do on a personal scale (annual medical check-up, annual car service, etc..) every company that commercialises a product must think about an “annual check-up” for its labelling/packaging.

It is true that this point enters into the company’s marketing and communication goals but, very often, as it is one point within a long list of variables and factor to be considered, this “service” can go unnoticed.

  •          How can we protect and improve the visual image of a product?
  •         Should we review the packaging from last year and think about new changes?
  •          Is the label in line with the brand image and the values we want to transmit?
  •          Can the level of packaging/labelling costs and materials be optimised?
  •          Are there other applications that we could use?
  •          What happens when a competitor imitates our label image and design? Does this weaken or strengthen our image?

............these are just some of the questions that are worthwhile considering to ensure that the labelling/packaging is fulfilling its objectives.

There are currently thousands of materials, different printing techniques, hundreds of finishes and labelling trends, and all of this leads to multiple combinations and that’s why we would recommend you to contact us so that we can help you to find the best solution that best adapts to your labelling needs, both from the technical and conceptual points of view.

Farewell to oil cruets

A while back we told you in this blog about a new norm that would be applied to bars and restaurants in Spain from the 1st of January 2014 regarding the obligation to present olive oil in bottles that are duly labelled, in non-refillable packaging or in one-use packaging.

This has led to the new “mini-bottle” format for olive oil and they can already be seen in many restaurants in Spain.

Once again, the label is the key element to make the product different and to be one of the main communication tools that the brands have available to them. The label has to manage to create emotions and sensations through the senses and to reproduce” the essence and the spirit” behind every olive oil.

This measure means it is now a good time to think about a new label from the design point of view, communication options offered by the different types of labels and the required adjustments – as per the norm- for labelling these new bottles.

At IPE-Innovaciones Para Etiquetajes S.L. we offer you an extensive range of labelling options like our Graphic Design Service so that your labels are in line with legal requirements.

Send us your product information (logo, name, label size, etc..) and we will prepare a non-committal design quote and a labelling quote.

Ecological labels from recycled paper

At IPE -Innovaciones Para Etiquetajes S.L.- we started up the IPE EcoConciencia programme 3 years ago, a programme based on a whole series of actions aimed at minimising the impact on the environment and to increase awareness about the importance of conserving our surroundings.

There is now greater awareness about the need to protect and take care of the environment. In this sense, and related to the production and manufacture of labels, the advances in materials over the past few years have been important and nowadays it is possible to manufacture labels made with natural and ecological papers with the end result being a “ 100% ECOLOGICAL LABEL"

An attractive label to get consumer attention

Fuente imagen: Barlow Doherty
A design agency, was given a challenge: To develop a new image and label for a South African brand of wine, but in such a way that, through the label, the sensation of “being on holiday” was transmitted.

In order to do so, the studio opted for a flashy, fresh and multicolour label design that allowed them to incorporate many of the concepts–like the map of South Africa-  that they wanted to include on the label with the aim of transmitting the “ experiences lived” during holidays in South Africa.

This is an interesting idea that could well be applied to the different D.O. areas, linking the product to the tourism experiences that can be enjoyed in a specific geographical region.

Gourmet Products and Booklet Labels: A perfect combination

In the Gourmet products sector the packaging design, the materials, the label image, the texts... are key elements that explain the products and the arguments that justify the “premium” nature of the product.

It is not only important to know what to say and how to say it, but also to capture this information in such a way that it is attractive for the consumer.

Therefore, booklet labels are an ideal option for gourmet products given that they provide a space where the product’s differentiating features can be expressed (elaboration process, images about product production, etc..) and added value content like recipes, nutritional information, etc...

Ask for information about Booklet Labels for Gourmet Products by sending an e-mail to marketing@ipe-innovaciones.com

Stamping on labels: What is it?

Stamping is a finishing process where a metallised effect is applied onto the label.

The stamping technique allows us to give the label a distinguished finish, producing a quality product and higher added value image. Although it has been used a lot in the wine sector, stampings are more and more often being applied to cosmetic, food and olive oil products, as well as in other markets.

If you would like to get more details about the options that can be worked with this finishing process for you labels and therefore achieve a new image, please do not hesitate to contact us by sending an e-mail to marketing@ipe-innovaciones.com and we will inform you about how stamping can be applied to the design of your current label and what the end result would be like.
